The family of 44-year-old Maureen Nduku is demanding justice after she succumbed to gunshot wounds allegedly inflicted by a police officer in Gikomba, Nairobi.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Nduku was shot on Monday, August 3, when police officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station responded to a reported robbery and commotion in the busy Gikomba area.
According to the family and Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, Nduku was caught by a bullet during the police response and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment, where she later died.
“I did not know what was happening until a neighbour came and told me that she wanted to inform me of something. Upon interrogation, she informed me that our kin had been hospitalised after being shot by police while going to the market,” a neighbour said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The family said the death had left them devastated, with relatives calling on the government to ensure the officer responsible is held accountable .
“The developments have really destabilised us, and what we are asking for from the government is justice for the family of Maureen. The police who did that should be brought to book,” the family said.
At the same time, Nduku’s sister-in-law, Damaris Kieti, questioned the circumstances surrounding the shooting and called for greater accountability in the use of firearms by police officers.
“My question is to the government on how they train their police. Are they allowed to open fire anywhere, and how many people should we lose due to the carelessness of such officers?” Kieti said.
The family said the officer involved had apologised but maintained that an apology was not enough, demanding that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen take responsibility and ensure action is taken.
Vocal Africa said Nduku was hit after police officers responded to an alleged robbery incident in which a group of young men had reportedly blocked a footbridge and robbed traders and members of the public.
