Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has condemned the violence and disorder that marred the FKF Super Cup clash between Gor Mahia and Tusker FC at Nyayo National Stadium, with fans and journalists reportedly assaulted during the chaos that followed the match.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The federation issued the statement after Tusker defeated Gor Mahia 3–1 in a match overshadowed by scenes of supporters storming the pitch, damaging property and disrupting the trophy presentation.
Security officers deployed tear gas as tensions escalated, while videos and accounts circulating online appeared to show several confrontations involving officers, supporters and journalists.
“There is no place for violence, destruction of property, intimidation, or any conduct that puts the safety of players, journalists, officials, fans, security personnel and the public at risk,” FKF said.
📌 What You Need to Know
Among the incidents raising concern is the reported firing of the first canister of tear gas into a crowd of supporters, which witnesses claim intensified the confrontation between fans and security officers.
There are also allegations involving an officer who fired what was described as a rubber bullet at a fan, as well as another officer allegedly seen pursuing supporters while armed with a firearm. The circumstances surrounding the incidents remain subject to verification.
Journalists covering the match were also caught up in the confrontation, with reports that some security officers attempted to force journalists to delete footage from their phones and cameras.
One incident circulating online reportedly shows an officer slapping a popular journalist and football personality after he attempted to intervene when colleagues were being confronted by security officers.
Another video and witness account have also raised concerns over an alleged assault on a female supporter, with claims that an officer kicked her in the neck area during the confrontation.
FKF acknowledged concerns over the conduct of security officers, saying that while security agencies have a responsibility to maintain order, crowd-control measures must be used with restraint, professionalism and in accordance with the law.
