Former Cabinet Minister and veteran Ambassador Burudi Nabwera has died at the age of 99 years, leaving behind a legacy spanning diplomacy and elective politics.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Nabwera served as Kenya’s first Ambassador to the United States, the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Minister of State in the Office of the President.

He also made history as the first Member of Parliament for the Lugari Constituency after it was created in 1988.

Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya mourned the veteran leader, describing him as a distinguished public servant who served Kenya with dedication and honour.

📌 What You Need to Know

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Mzee Burudi Nabwera, a distinguished leader and diplomat who served our nation with dedication and honour,” Oparanya said.

“His contribution to Kenya’s diplomatic relations, governance and national development will remain etched in our history,” the CS stated.

Nabwera played a key role in Kenya’s early post-independence diplomatic engagement, representing the country at the UN from December 1963 to September 1970, after which he became Kenya’s first Ambassador to the U.S.

Beyond his diplomatic engagements, Nabwera held a senior government position as Minister of State in the Office of the late former President Daniel Moi.

He also served as Secretary-General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), which governed Kenya for years before the introduction of multiparty politics.

Nabwera later entered elective politics, becoming the first Lugari Constituency MP following its establishment in 1988, where he represented the interests of residents in the National Assembly.
