Former Cabinet Minister and Kilgoris Member of Parliament Gideon Sitelu Konchellah has died after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to sources privy to the information, the former lawmaker passed away on Saturday, June 13, sending shockwaves in Narok County and the entire country.
Konchellah served as Kilgoris MP for several terms, between 2003 and 2022, under various parties, including the Party of National Unity (PNU), the United Republican Party (URP), and the Jubilee Party.
Besides serving as an MP, Gideon also served as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons in the late former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration between 2006 and 2007.
📌 What You Need to Know
During his tenure as a Minister, he oversaw the landmark Refugee Act of 2006, which strengthened the country’s refugee management and legal framework.
This piece of legislation replaced the repressive, colonial-era Control of Aliens Act, establishing a humane and legal framework to register and protect refugees in Kenya.
After several years of serving as an MP and a Minister, Konchellah stepped down from the Kilgoris parliamentary seat ahead of the 2022 general elections to launch an unsuccessful bid for the Narok County Senatorial seat.
Details surrounding his death and funeral arrangements have yet to be officially announced by the family or relevant authorities at the time of publication.
While confirming the passing of Konchellah, Current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli described the deceased as both his predecessor and successor in Parliament.
“I have sadly learnt of the death of Honourable Gideon Konchellah, former MP for Kilgoris Constituency. The late Konchellah was both my predecessor and successor," he said.
