Former Matungu MP David Were is mourning the death of his son, Hanington Were, who was killed in an early morning attack in Kisumu.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

According to the former legislator, Hanington had stepped out of his house with a friend shortly after midnight on May 24 when they were ambushed by two men riding on a motorcycle at around 1 a.m. He was reportedly attacked and left with fatal stab wounds.

“At the hospital, I am told that he was taken around 8 pm. And when he arrived, I was told that he had died. I am being told that he had stab wounds at his back,” stated the Former MP.

More witness reports indicate that the attack happened at Robert Owuko Estate, Kisumu, where the gang on a motorbike attacked and left in a hurry.

📌 What You Need to Know

News of his death spread fast, reaching family members at around 8:30 a.m on Sunday, with scores of residents from the estate pouring to the scene, visibly shaken by what had unfolded in their neighbourhood.

His body was later transported to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where police confirmed they had commenced investigations into the murder, with officers actively pursuing leads on the two suspects.

The killing has brought renewed attention to a troubling pattern of crime in Kisumu , where residents say robbery with violence has been rising steadily in recent months, especially during late-night hours.

With the sudden news, residents of Kisumu came out complaining of the rising insecurity cases in the area, attributed to boda boda riders, who are being accused of colluding with criminal gangs to enable the criminal activities.

"The community in Kisumu has no security at all. There are many boda boda youths who have entered that sector, and they have completely destroyed it," a resident told reporters from the scene.

Locals have flagged poor street lighting as a major enabler of crime. Areas stretching from Robert Owuko Estate through Mountain View to Kore are said to remain completely dark at night, offering cover for criminals.
