Former Attorney General and Democratic Party of Kenya leader Justin Muturi has alleged that an attack targeting opposition leaders during a rally in Garissa amounted to an attempted assassination.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Muturi made the allegation after chaos disrupted the gathering attended by Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and other opposition leaders.

“This is an attempted assassination!!!” Muturi declared, describing the incident as a grave matter that should not be taken lightly.

Muturi, who also served as Public Service Cabinet Secretary in the Kenya Kwanza administration, warned that the incident could deepen political divisions and create fear among Kenyans.

📌 What You Need to Know

“It amounts to an attempted assassination and risks balkanising the nation and creating fear among citizens,” he said.

The former CS called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately launch a thorough investigation, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and brought to justice.

Muturi, who also spoke on behalf of the United Opposition, said the group would not be intimidated or silenced, pledging to continue advocating for democracy, justice, peace and the right of every Kenyan to participate freely in the country’s affairs.

His remarks came against the backdrop of another chaotic political gathering on Saturday, September 12, where several vehicles were reportedly torched during a UDA meeting at Nembure Stadium in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was reportedly evacuated from the venue as the situation deteriorated while he led a mobilisation exercise for UDA polling centre officials in the county.

Reports indicated that several vehicles were set on fire, including some belonging to journalists covering the meeting, after a confrontation broke out around the stadium.
