France has appointed Wadid Benaabou as its new Ambassador-designate to Kenya, replacing outgoing envoy Arnaud Suquet, who has served in the position since 2022.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Benaabou, a former senior adviser at France’s Court of Auditors, announced his appointment on social media, describing it as an honour and highlighting the strong ties between France and Kenya.
He also addressed Kenyans in a mix of Swahili and French, expressing his readiness to begin the new assignment and work with Kenyan partners.
“Habari Wakenya! I am honoured to begin my mission as France’s Ambassador-designate to Kenya. France and Kenya share a strong partnership, rooted in friendship and a shared ambition for the future. I look forward to working alongside our Kenyan partners. Niko tayari!” Benaabou stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
The appointment comes amid renewed French interest in expanding investments in Kenya and increasing the presence of its companies in the country, adding a fresh economic dimension to the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Meanwhile, outgoing Ambassador Suquet reflected on his tenure with gratitude, highlighting the friendships and connections he built while representing France in Kenya and previously in Somalia.
“My time in Kenya has come to an end, but I leave behind strong ties, great memories, and true friendships. Wishing Ambassador-designate Wadid Benaabou, who is taking over from me, all the best in this new chapter,” Suquet stated.
Beyond his ambassadorial role, Suquet, who also served as France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi, has been assigned a new position at the French Foreign Ministry focusing on Africa, starting this September.
Benaabou will, however, have to complete the formal diplomatic process before assuming office, including obtaining Kenya’s agreement, receiving his formal appointment and presenting his credentials to President William Ruto.
The appointment comes as Kenya and France deepen their economic ties, with French shipping giant CMA CGM pledging €700 million , about Ksh106 billion, to modernise and expand terminals at the Port of Mombasa.
