Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that the government is demanding identity cards of residents of Ol-Kalou constituency in exchange for gas cylinders and mattresses ahead of the July 16 by-election.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement on Tuesday, July 7, Gachagua claimed he had received reports that the exercise is aimed at denying residents of the constituency an opportunity to participate in the upcoming polls.

According to the former DP, the move is designed to manipulate the upcoming by-elections, in which the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will compete against Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Reports reaching me from Ol Kalou are that residents are being asked to surrender their identity cards in exchange for a free gas cylinder and a GoK-branded mattress. This is a scheme to deny you the opportunity and right to vote in the by-elections of July 16 2026," Gachagua stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

He urged residents to accept the goodies, but cautioned them against handing over their identity cards to anyone, warning that doing so could jeopardise their constitutional right to vote.

"Please don't surrender your Identity Card to anyone. Let the Government and UDA campaigners give you the gas cylinder and a GoK mattress," he added.

His statement comes a day after the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum began distributing subsidised LPG gas cylinders to households in Nyandarua County, particularly in Ol-Kalou constituency, in what it said was a fresh phase in the government's clean cooking drive.

The ministry distributed 20,000 gas cylinders at a subsidised price of Ksh1,500, down from the original price of Ksh5,500.

According to Petroleum Principal Secretary Kello Harsama, Nyandarua is now the sixth county in Kenya to benefit from the subsidised program.

"Nyandarua is the 6th county in Kenya to benefit from the subsidised LPG programme, and Ol Kalou is the first constituency in Nyandarua to benefit from the programme and is among the first nine constituencies in the country to receive this support," stated PS Harsama.
