Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed he is prepared to support an opposition candidate other than himself if his political allies settle on a different individual to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Gachagua ended speculation on Monday, August 24, during the final day of his 55-day Wamunyoro consultations conclave in Nyeri County, where he presented a comprehensive outcome of consultations on the country's political direction.

During his post-consultation address, Gachagua said he received strong support for his presidential bid, reiterating that he was the best-suited candidate to take on Ruto in less than a years' time.

However, Gachagua also calmed fears within the opposition camp by further revealing that from the various consultations, he was warned against allowing personal interests to stand in the way of removing Ruto from office.

📌 What You Need to Know

“People have told me they have analysed and decided that Rigathi Gachagua needs to be the preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections,” he said.

Adding, “Kenyans have made it clear that we cannot gamble or take a risk that will bring Ruto back. Do whatever it takes, including sacrificing our personal interests,” he stated.

Gachagua began the Wamunyoro consultations as part of efforts to engage grassroots leaders, professionals, youth and other groups on the political direction of his support base ahead of the 2027 election. The consultations were subsequently extended beyond the original 45-day period.

During his speech on Monday, he also highlighted various sectors that he claims stakeholders have demanded an overhaul of once the so-called alternative government goes into power, including healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Gachagua's remarks are likely to ease concerns within the opposition camp, where speculation has persisted that competing presidential ambitions could trigger divisions or a potential fallout among the parties seeking to challenge Ruto.

In particular, the likes of Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang'i, Wiper Patriotic Front's Kalonzo Musyoka and People's Liberation Party (PLP)'s Martha Karua have openly expressed interest in battling Ruto.
