Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has fired back at President William Ruto after the Head of State accused retired President Uhuru Kenyatta of being the “chief financier” and “sponsor” of the opposition.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking at the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters in Nairobi, Gachagua told President Ruto to leave Uhuru alone and instead face him ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“William Ruto, please leave President Uhuru Kenyatta alone. President Uhuru Kenyatta is retired and face your competitor, Rigathi Gachagua,” he told the press on Friday, August 14.
Gachagua admonished his former boss, insisting that he will be the key challenger at the 2027 polls and not the country’s fourth president.
📌 What You Need to Know
“You cannot pretend that you are in competition with President Uhuru Kenyatta. He will not be on the ballot,” Gachagua asserted.
President Ruto on Thursday accused his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, of acting as the “chief financier” and “sponsor” of the opposition in an alleged effort to sabotage his government and unseat him in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to residents in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Ruto criticised the retired president’s leadership record and claimed Kenyatta was organising political proxies to challenge his administration.
“When you look at those people, didn’t their sponsor fail at matters of affordable housing?” Ruto told his supporters in Eldoret.
“Now he has gone to organise his proxies, sending people here to come and compete with me,” he added.
In his pushback on Friday morning, DCP party leader Gachagua highlighted what he termed as failures by the Ruto administration, including what he described as the growing use of goons and perceived failures of the Social Health Authority (SHA).
