Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged that he will not be a source of division within the united opposition as ongoing efforts to agree on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election continue.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking during a church service in Kajiado on Sunday, May 3, the former DP stated his priority is unity and assured Kenyans that his personal interest in the presidency will not undermine the broader objective of consolidating support behind one flag bearer.

"I want to promise the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua will not be a dividing factor in the quest for one presidential candidate. I believe and pray they pick me, but if we agree on someone else, I will support him," he said.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader further clarified that declarations by various leaders should not be interpreted as signs of disunity, but rather as part of a strategy to build individual support bases before a joint decision is made.

📌 What You Need to Know

"Our plan and quest for one presidential candidate still stands. The fact that we have declared individually does not undermine that commitment and that objective," he added.

For now, Gachagua stated that every official within the United Opposition is consolidating support across the country, and they will soon sit down to decide who has what it takes to fly the flag.

On who will be picked as the flagbearer, Gachagua highlighted several requirements, stating that popularity, support, and consensus will guide the final decision.

His remarks come days after the former DP announced his interest in the presidency, stating that he has all it takes to unseat President William Ruto.

However, it is worth noting that Gachagua has an active case in court where he is currently fighting what he terms as unfair removal from office. If he is cleared, the former Mathira MP can vie for the presidency in 2027.

The united opposition has different candidates who have both declared interests in the top seat in 2027, with both stating that it is they who can save this country.
