Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has explained the delay in payment of July 2026 salaries for county employees, attributing it to the transition into the new financial year.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

During an interview on Wednesday, August 12, Sakaja said the county normally pays its workers by the end of each month, but the latest delay arose because the new budget had not been uploaded and approved.

The governor said the budget must go through the required process involving the Controller of Budget (CoB) and the National Treasury before funds can be released.

“During the financial year, salaries are paid on time by the end of the month from the 27th. There was just a delay because it is a new financial year. When the budget is late, it must be uploaded for the Controller of Budget and that is why we published a notice to inform workers of the delay,” he said.

📌 What You Need to Know

Sakaja assured workers that he was personally overseeing efforts to resolve the issue and facilitate the release of their salaries.

“We are sorting out that problem. I am dealing with it myself because it is the right of the workers,” he added.

Nairobi County had notified employees on Monday, August 10, that processing of their July salaries had been affected by the delay in approval and uploading of the county budget raising concerns over potential service disruptions .

Sakaja maintained that funds were available for the payment of workers, emphasising that the situation was temporary.

Further, he acknowledged the impact of the delay on workers, noting that he had also not received his salary.

In the notice, the county administration apologised to employees and recognised that the delay could create financial difficulties for workers and their families.
