The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued a notice of intention to compulsorily acquire more than 300 land parcels for the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a gazetted list dated September 10 and published on behalf of the Kenya Railways Corporation, the commission outlined additional parcels that would be affected by the planned Ksh700 billion project, as well as deletions and corrections to previous lists.
NLC has directed affected landowners and other persons with an interest in the listed properties to inspect the acquisition plans at its Nairobi offices or the Kisumu County Coordinator’s office.
“Interested persons should inspect plans of the affected land at the offices of the Commission at Ardhi House 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi and County Co-ordinator’s Offices in Kisumu County during official working hours,” the notice stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
A large number of parcels in Kisumu County have been added to the list, with the affected properties spread across Chiga and Sidho West areas.
The schedule includes privately owned land as well as parcels whose registered ownership is yet to be determined.
Some of the listed properties are also recorded under deceased owners, while others have existing charges or cautions attached to them.
The notice includes numerous small urban parcels in Kisumu Municipality, many measuring about 0.0206 hectares, alongside larger pieces of land in other parts of the county.
Among the newly listed properties is a 4.9252-hectare parcel that was reportedly the subject of a 2021 court case over ownership between Kenya Railways and members of the Nubian community.
NLC further stated that notices for inquiries into the affected properties will be published in the Kenya Gazette in line with the Land Act.
