Treasury has confirmed that construction of the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba Expressway is expected to commence by June 2027, providing a new timeline for the major road project along Kenya’s Northern Corridor even as it remains at the feasibility study stage.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The confirmation was made during the seventh meeting of the Interagency Project Steering Committee chaired by Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, where the government reviewed preparations for the 237-kilometre expressway.

According to the Treasury, the committee noted ongoing preparatory activities for the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba corridor and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to commence the project by June 2027.

The Treasury said the timeline is aligned with the planned commissioning of the Rironi-Mau Summit section and a directive issued by President William Ruto on the development of the Northern Corridor.

“The Committee considered the status of the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba corridor. It noted ongoing preparatory activities and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to commence the project by June 2027,” the Treasury told Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday.

The Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba project is planned as a modern tolled dual carriageway connecting the Mau Summit area to Eldoret and onward to Malaba on the Kenya-Uganda border.

The project is being pursued under a Public-Private Partnership model, with the government seeking to use private capital to finance and develop major infrastructure projects while reducing pressure on public finances.

At the same time, PS Kiptoo said the government was focused on resolving the remaining issues affecting the wider road programme and ensuring that implementation remains on course.

“Our priority is to resolve outstanding issues, strengthen coordination and accelerate implementation to ensure these strategic road projects are delivered efficiently and sustainably,” Kiptoo said.

Meanwhile, the steering committee has directed all responsible government institutions to urgently address outstanding issues within agreed timelines and the established implementation framework.
