The Government has significantly expanded Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital–Mutuini in Dagoretti South, Nairobi, in a major push to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve access to specialised healthcare services.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The facility has been upgraded from a 40-bed hospital into a 400-bed Level 5 specialist referral hospital and is expected to serve nearly 1.5 million patients annually once fully operational.
The expansion forms part of Kenya’s broader healthcare reform agenda under the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) framework, which seeks to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths while improving healthcare access across the country.
The upgraded hospital now features advanced maternity and newborn care units, intensive care and high dependency units, a renal centre, modern diagnostic and radiology services, specialised laboratories and fully equipped operating theatres.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo, the expansion is expected to significantly improve access to specialised healthcare services for residents in Nairobi and neighbouring areas.
He noted that the upgraded facility will also help ease pressure on major referral hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital by bringing specialised treatment services closer to communities.
The facility will also introduce innovative neonatal support services, including human milk banks aimed at supporting vulnerable infants requiring specialised care.
Beyond treatment services, the hospital is expected to support medical training, specialised consultations and referral services for patients within Nairobi and neighbouring counties.
The Government says the project reflects its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure under Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Additionally, the expansion is also aimed at improving maternal and child healthcare outcomes through increased access to specialised treatment and modern medical services.
