The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) has directed transport operators to review the salaries of heavy vehicle drivers to reflect the new revised minimum wages.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In an advisory on Thursday, September 10, KTA said the new minimum wage rates took effect on May 1, 2026.
According to the association, Transport operators should review their payrolls and employment arrangements to ensure they comply with the new rates.
"The Kenya Transporters Association Limited (KTA) reminds all transport operators and employers of their obligation to comply with the statutory minimum wage requirements applicable to Drivers of Heavy Commercial Vehicles as defined under the Traffic Act (Cap. 403), namely vehicles of tare weight exceeding 6,720 pounds (3,048 kg)," KTA stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
"KTA urges all members to take the necessary action to ensure full compliance with the applicable labour laws and minimum wage requirements," it added.
The association further called on employers to address any underpayments that may have arisen from May 1, 2026, where applicable.
The advisory comes four months after President William Ruto announced a 12 per cent increase in the minimum wage for general workers and a 15 per cent increase for agricultural workers during Labour Day celebrations on May 1.
KTA's latest directive now requires transport operators to review the pay of employees falling under the statutory classification of heavy commercial vehicle drivers and address any underpayments arising from the revised rates.
Under the new rates, heavy commercial vehicle drivers working in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Eldoret cities are entitled to a basic minimum monthly wage of Ksh40,724.23 with a house allowance.
However, where an employer does not provide housing, the driver is entitled to an additional 15 per cent house allowance amounting to Ksh6,108.63, bringing the total pay for the driver to Ksh46,832.86.
