The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has warned students about a fake notice circulating online claiming that applications for 2026/27 Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) first-time and subsequent loans will open on July 15.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a public advisory on July 1, HELB clarified that it did not issue the notice and urged students to verify all loan-related communication through its official channels.
“The KMTC loan application notice circulating online is FAKE and was not issued by HELB. Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only,” the notice read.
The fake notice targeted students who have been awaiting updates on the opening of the loan application portal, which HELB indicated will be expected in the second week of July.
📌 What You Need to Know
The fake notice had advised KMTC students to prepare application documents ahead of the purported opening date, but HELB has dismissed the information as false and urged students to remain vigilant against misinformation and potential scams.
Further, the board emphasised that the only phone number that should not be used for enquiries or services is 0711052000, cautioning the public against using the one listed in the flagged notice.
The opening of the portal depends on the completion of student placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Official placement is yet to begin as KUCCPS continues to allow students who missed the deadline to request consideration by submitting an email after having previously extended the application window.
However, subsequent loan applications for continuing students for the 2026/2027 academic year were opened on June 1.
Though the exact portal opening date for first-time applicants is yet to be specified, students who sat their 2025 KCSE examinations have been instructed to prepare the required documentation as they wait.
