The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued new guidance to borrowers who have changed their SIM cards and can no longer access the board's *642# USSD service.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

HELB said affected borrowers can request an update of their registered phone numbers to restore access to its mobile services.

Borrowers experiencing the problem have been asked to share their National ID number and new phone number with HELB through its official communication channels for assistance.

The intervention targets borrowers whose new phone numbers are not yet linked to their HELB records, preventing them from accessing services through the USSD platform.

📌 What You Need to Know

The *642# service is one of the channels HELB provides for borrowers and applicants to access loan-related information using their mobile phones.

The issue is particularly important for students and applicants who rely on the USSD platform to track the progress of their loan applications.

In August, HELB reminded students and other applicants that they could track their loan application status through the HELB online portal, *642# USSD service, and mobile application.

Applicants using the online portal can log into their accounts and access information relating to their loan applications without visiting HELB offices.

Those using mobile phones can dial *642# and follow the prompts to check their application status.

A change of SIM card can, however, disrupt access to the USSD service where the new number has not been updated in HELB's records.
