The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has flagged a social media account impersonating the institution and offering fake clearance certificates.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke , HELB shared screenshots of the fraudulent account, which showed it was misleading members of the public by requesting a Ksh1,999 payment, claiming the amount would be refunded after a certificate was issued and sent via email.

The board urged applicants seeking compliance or clearance certificates to use only its official platforms and contacts to avoid falling victim to fraud.

“Beware of fraudsters masquerading as HELB spreading false information. Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only,” the notice stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

HELB further advised the public to report accounts that impersonate the institution or request unofficial payments.

According to the board’s official website, loan beneficiaries who are up to date with repayments or still within the repayment grace period can apply for a Loanee Compliance Certificate through the HELB Portal or e-Citizen Portal.

Individuals who have completed repayment are issued a Certificate of Clearance after meeting the required conditions.

Additionally, those who have never benefited from HELB loans can apply for a Non-Loanee Compliance Certificate through the same official platforms.

Applicants can request the certificates by logging into their HELB accounts , accessing the compliance certificate section and submitting the required details.

A Ksh1,000 processing fee applies for clearance certificates issued to eligible applicants, with payments made only through approved channels provided during the application.
