DCI detectives have arrested a suspect over an alleged Ksh2.4 million land fraud in Machakos, after he reportedly posed as the registered owner of a prime parcel along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Detectives based in Kalama Sub-County arrested the suspect following investigations into a scheme involving forged documents and the alleged use of another person's identity.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect had spent months presenting himself as the legitimate owner of the property while using the identity of another man.
He allegedly produced a forged title deed and a fake National Identity Card bearing the name of the purported owner to make the transaction appear genuine.
📌 What You Need to Know
The buyer, seeking to verify the property before making any payment, conducted an official search at the Machakos Land Registry.
The search indicated that the property was registered in the name appearing on the documents presented by the suspect, giving the buyer confidence that he was dealing with the rightful owner.
Convinced that the transaction was legitimate, the buyer entered into a sale agreement before a lawyer in Machakos and paid Ksh2.4 million for the property.
However, trouble emerged after the money changed hands, with the purported vendor allegedly becoming unreachable and avoiding scheduled meetings as the buyer sought to proceed with the post-sale processes.
The investigation reportedly established that the man who had presented himself as the registered owner was using a stolen identity, leading detectives to trace him.
Following an intelligence-led operation, officers arrested the suspect at Mtito Andei and placed him in custody as they processed the case ahead of his arraignment in court.
