Authorities have uncovered a worrying trend in Dandora, Nairobi County, where a criminal syndicate was using a mobile phone repair shop as a front to conceal and distribute stolen property.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The National Police Service confirmed the developments in a statement on Wednesday, May 27, with at least five suspects arrested following a targeted operation.
According to police, the operation was informed by intelligence reports and heightened surveillance within the area, amid growing concerns over increased incidents of mobile phone snatching and robberies.
"Acting on credible leads, the officers raided a mobile phone repair shop located in Dandora Phase III, a premise now believed to have been operating as a concealment and distribution point for stolen property," the NPS revealed.
📌 What You Need to Know
During the raid, authorities recovered 21 mobile phones of different makes, believed to have been stolen from members of the public through robberies and snatching incidents within the surrounding estates.
Authorities also recovered 12 Kenya Power token meters suspected to have been unlawfully removed from residential premises and hidden inside the shop.
The five suspects will remain in police custody pending further investigations and arraignment in court.
Discovery of the items has since raised concerns over the increasing use of ordinary businesses as cover for criminal operations, particularly in densely populated estates.
On most occasions, these items, mostly stolen electronics, are dismantled for parts and resold.
The latest operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks operating within Nairobi and the surrounding areas.
