Thousands of students placed in universities and colleges for the 2026/2027 academic year can now apply for government scholarships and loans after the Ministry of Education officially opened the Higher Education Financing application portal for first-time applicants.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the opening of the portal while releasing the 2026/2027 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placement results, urging all eligible students to submit their applications as soon as possible.

"Following the conclusion of the placement process, the Higher Education Financing portal is now open for application by first-time applicants," the CS said, adding that students can apply through the Higher Education Financing and Higher Education Loans Board portals.

The announcement comes after KUCCPS completed the placement of 293,869 students into degree, diploma, certificate and artisan programmes across universities, technical institutions and other tertiary colleges for the 2026/2027 academic year.

📌 What You Need to Know

Students who have been placed by KUCCPS can submit their funding applications through the official Higher Education Financing portal or the HELB portal.

The Ministry advises students to apply as early as possible to allow sufficient time for processing before reporting to their respective institutions.

Additionally, the Funding application enables learners to be considered for government scholarships, tuition loans and upkeep support under Kenya’s higher education financing model.

Universities and colleges are now expected to begin issuing admission letters and joining instructions to students placed during the 2026/2027 placement cycle.

During the announcement, Ogamba also directed KUCCPS to develop a mechanism that will allow late applications for students who qualified but missed the initial placement window.

He further announced that the university transfer window has been extended from two weeks to one month, giving students more time to change institutions or programmes where necessary.
