Birth certificate application fees remain in effect despite the government announcing plans to scrap them, Huduma Kenya has confirmed.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Responding to queries from members of the public, Huduma Kenya confirmed that the application fees for the critical document have not been scrapped, meaning the fee waiver has yet to be implemented.

According to the agency, applicants are still required to pay the existing statutory fees for birth certificate services, including Ksh 250 for new birth certificates and Ksh 500 for late registration.

For those seeking to make any corrections on the documents, the fee still stands at Ksh1,000.

"The cost for new certificates is Ksh 250, late registration is Ksh 500, and applications with corrections are Ksh 1,000," Huduma Kenya said in response after being asked whether the charges were still effective.

The clarification comes amid anticipation for the government to scrap fees for birth certificate applications as part of ongoing reforms to improve access to civil registration services.

However, Huduma Kenya's responses suggest that the proposed waiver has not yet taken effect, and the current fee structure remains in place.

Earlier this week, Immigration Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang revealed that the government is planning to abolish the fee charged on the document.

According to Kipsang, the move is a part of a broader digital transformation programme after the ministry also took to downloading the document online through the eCitizen platform .

“If we are removing Ksh300 for IDs and Ksh1,000 for replacement, then we will also discuss removing the birth certificate fee to make it easy for Kenyans to get the documents they need,” Kipsang said while explaining the reforms.
