The High Court has found Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja in contempt of court over roadblocks and barricades erected by police around Nairobi during the June 25 protests.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Justice Patricia Nyaundi held Kanja personally responsible for failing to ensure compliance with a court order regulating the deployment of roadblocks and barricades during demonstrations.

The court ordered Kanja to appear on September 22 for mitigation and sentencing over the contempt finding.

“I hereby direct Douglas Kanja to attend court on September 22, 2026,” the judge stated during the proceedings.

📌 What You Need to Know

The orders come after police barricaded parts of Nairobi as the city prepared for demonstrations marking the anniversary of the June 25, 2024, Finance Bill protests.

Katiba Institute challenged the police action, arguing that officers had blocked access to the Central Business District despite existing court orders governing the use of roadblocks and barricades.

The orders required the police to give members of the public prior notice before restricting access to roads during demonstrations.

Several roads and entry points into Nairobi were affected, including routes through Roysambu, Kangemi, Ngong Road, Uhuru Highway, Moi Avenue and Parliament Road.
