Police have arrested a man suspected of being a key player in an illegal firearms trafficking network after officers recovered firearms and a cache of ammunition during an operation at the Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint (VCP).

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The National Police Service (NPS) said the suspect was intercepted on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, while travelling towards Nairobi. Officers carried out a targeted search of the vehicle, leading to the recovery of firearms and a large quantity of ammunition concealed inside.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the number or type of firearms recovered but described the seizure as a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illegal arms trade.

According to preliminary investigations, detectives believe the suspect has been involved in the illicit sale, supply, and distribution of firearms and ammunition across several parts of the country. Police allege the recovered weapons were destined for Nairobi and its surrounding areas, where they could have been used to facilitate criminal activities.

📌 What You Need to Know

The interception, police said, has disrupted what they believe is a major supply chain responsible for moving illegal firearms into the capital and other regions.

"The suspect is deeply involved in the illicit sale, supply and distribution of illegal firearms and ammunition across multiple regions," the National Police Service said in a statement, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the network.

The suspect is currently being held in police custody and is assisting detectives with investigations aimed at identifying other individuals linked to the alleged operation, including suppliers, transporters, and intended buyers.

Police say the outcome of the arraignment in court will occur once investigations are completed, at which time he will face charges related to the unlawful possession and trafficking of firearms and ammunition

The latest arrest comes as security agencies continue to intensify operations targeting the proliferation of illegal firearms , which authorities say remain a major driver of violent crime, armed robberies, banditry and other forms of organised criminal activity across the country.

Kanyonyo Vehicle Checkpoint, located along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, has in recent years become a strategic security point where police have intercepted suspects linked to various criminal activities, including narcotics trafficking, counterfeit goods, and illegal firearms.
