One person was injured and rushed to the hospital after a building that was under demolition collapsed in the Bombolulu area of Mombasa on Tuesday, triggering panic among residents and passersby.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene as authorities moved to secure the area and assess the extent of the damage caused by the collapse.

Witnesses said that a section of the structure suddenly caved in while demolition works were ongoing, trapping one individual beneath the debris before rescuers managed to pull the victim out alive.

The injured person was later taken to the hospital for treatment as rescue officials continued combing through the rubble to ensure no other victims had been trapped.

📌 What You Need to Know

However, it was not immediately clear whether the demolition was sanctioned by the County Government of Mombasa.

The latest incident has once again raised concerns over building safety standards and enforcement in Kenya amid a growing number of structural failures reported in recent years.

In April last year, tension gripped residents living near Coast General Hospital in Mombasa after cracks appeared on an 11-storey residential building , sparking fears that the structure could collapse.

Residents occupying the building were forced to evacuate after county officials and national security teams led by Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno intervened following heavy rains that weakened the structure.

Preliminary assessments at the time indicated that the building had been constructed without adhering to proper safety and engineering guidelines, putting occupants at significant risk.

Mombasa County Fire and Disaster Chief Officer Ibrahim Basafar revealed that the basement of the building had already caved in, leaving the entire structure dangerously tilted.
