The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are joining hands to prepare for floods, landslides and other disasters expected during the October to December 2026 rains.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The two institutions recently ran a joint Emergency Medical Team (EMT) preparedness exercise, designed to sharpen the country's ability to respond quickly when disaster strikes.
It was a hands-on drill that combined careful planning performed over the past week, expert input and realistic scenarios to test how ready Kenya's emergency medical response really is.
Teams were put through their paces to check how fast medical units could be activated, mobilised and deployed once an emergency is declared.
📌 What You Need to Know
The exercise also looked closely at whether enough medical supplies and resources would be available should a major crisis unfold.
Beyond logistics, planners walked through possible public health scenarios and simulations, building practical frameworks that help teams move from standby mode into the field without delay.
At its core, the drill was about tightening coordination between the military and civilian agencies that would work side by side during a real emergency.
On the other hand, KDF is working with the state to support rescue operations in areas that may become inaccessible by road, including through the deployment of helicopters in lowland areas such as the lower Tana and Budalangi.
KDF is also collaborating with the Kenya Red Cross (KRC) and county governments to ensure that at-risk communities can be evacuated and supported, including joint search-and-rescue training.
The Kenya Red Cross Society, on the other hand, also indicated it will coordinate with the National Youth Service (NYS) to support early warnings, evacuations, and emergency response.
