The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed that only three of the 62 deaths linked to the 2024 Gen Z protests have reached court, with majority of the cases remaining under investigation nearly two years after the demonstrations.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement issued on Monday, June 22, seen by this publication, IPOA said the three cases are the only ones that have so far met the necessary thresholds for criminal proceedings.

“The three cases before court are those in which the evidence and prosecutorial thresholds have been met, enabling criminal proceedings to commence,” the statement read.

IPOA also detailed the status of other cases, adding that three have been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review and direction, one is undergoing internal legal review, five were closed following directions from the ODPP, four were closed internally, while 46 remain at various stages of investigation.

📌 What You Need to Know

The authority issued the update amid public scrutiny over accountability for protest-related deaths and allegations of police brutality during the demonstrations.

IPOA attributed the slow pace of investigations to the complexity of the cases, saying it relies on institutions such as the Government Chemist and National Forensic Laboratory for forensic examinations and ballistic analyses.

It also cited challenges related to insufficient evidence and prosecutorial review requirements before cases can proceed to court.

According to IPOA, completed investigations do not automatically result in prosecution, as some cases are closed when evidence is legally insufficient.

The authority also disclosed that it has registered an additional 27 death cases linked to the June 2025 Gen Z Memorial demonstrations , with one case already before court and 26 under active investigation.

Another 38 deaths were recorded during the July 2025 Saba Saba protests, of which two cases have been closed internally and 36 remain under investigation.
