The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has called for new policing strategies following a series of attacks that have left police officers dead and injured in different parts of the country.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, IPOA called on the National Police Service (NPS) to ensure policing is supported by “fit-for-purpose strategies” informed by evidence and good practice.

The Authority expressed concern over the attacks and killings of police officers in September, including Chief Inspector Adan Isaak Somo and Constable Bethwel Kibet, who were ambushed and killed at Gotu in Isiolo County.

"The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has raised concern over the safety of police officers following a series of attacks and killings in September," a statement from IPOA read.

Adding, " The Authority has called on the National Police Service (NPS) to ensure that policing is supported by fit-for-purpose strategies and insights based on evidence and good practice."

IPOA also cited one Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika, who was found dead in Kagira, Kabete, Kiambu County, as it raised concerns over the safety of officers serving across the country.

The authority described the death of police officers in the line of duty was devastating, adding that such incidents undermine public safety and legitimacy in policing.

“Kenyans want an empowered police service that is safe and engages communities confidently, effectively, professionally, and efficiently,” IPOA added.

The demand comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Isiolo, where five people, including two police officers, were killed during an armed attack at Gotu on September 16.

The incident sparked protests by residents a week ago, with demonstrators raising concerns over persistent insecurity and demanding stronger government action to protect communities in the affected areas.
