The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to a statement on September 23, IPOA said Osiemo died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the station in Kieni East Sub-County, prompting the authority to dispatch a team to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The authority said Osiemo’s body was removed from the station and taken to Narumoru Level 4 Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted in the presence of IPOA investigators and members of his family.
“We established that the deceased had been arrested by DCI officers with the assistance of Keroka Police Station in Nyamira County on Friday, September 18, 2026, in connection with an assault case,” IPOA said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The arrest raised questions over why Osiemo was being held in Nyeri after detectives had tracked him down and arrested him in Kisii County, with the DCI later providing an account of the events leading to his detention.
According to the DCI, Osiemo was wanted in connection with an assault causing actual bodily harm case reported at Narumoru Police Station.
The case arose from an incident on July 2, 2026, when he allegedly went to the home of a woman for whom he had previously worked as a farmhand, assaulted her and stabbed her several times before fleeing.
“The incident was reported at Narumoru Police Station, where the complainant was admitted to Tumutumu Hospital for nine days,” the DCI said.
Detectives later traced Osiemo to Kisii County, where he was arrested on September 18 with the assistance of officers from Keroka Police Station.
He was initially booked at Keroka before being transferred to Narumoru, where the DCI said he recorded his statement and was returned to the cells after being observed to be in normal condition.
