The Ministry of Defence has announced a vacancy for the position of Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Military Veterans, inviting applications from retired senior military officers ahead of the current office holder's exit on August 4, 2026.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, July 8, the ministry said the recruitment is being undertaken in line with the Military Veterans Act, with applications open for 21 days from the date of the announcement.

The position is only open to retired general officers of the Kenya Armed Forces or the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), with applicants also required to meet the integrity standards set out under Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Applicants have been directed to submit their personal identification details, career history and a written statement explaining their reasons and motivation for seeking the position.

📌 What You Need to Know

Applications are to be addressed to the Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Defence and delivered to Ulinzi House in Nairobi or sent through the ministry's postal address.

The Advisory Committee on Military Veterans is a statutory body established under the Military Veterans Act to advise the Cabinet Secretary for Defence on policies, programmes and matters affecting former members of the KDF.

The committee also plays a key role in safeguarding the welfare of military veterans by advising on healthcare, housing, education, rehabilitation, compensation and other support programmes aimed at improving their livelihoods after leaving active service.

As chairperson, the successful candidate will lead the committee's deliberations, provide strategic direction, oversee recommendations submitted to the Defence Ministry and coordinate engagement with government agencies and veterans' organisations.

The vacancy comes barely a month after President William Ruto approved a series of promotions, appointments and postings within the Kenya Defence Forces following recommendations from the Defence Council.

Among the changes, Major General John Maiso Nkoimo was appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, replacing Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who retired from service.
