The exercise, organized under the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF), will be the inaugural Association of African Air Forces Exercise (AAAFEX) Command Post and Field Training Exercise.

According to a statement by the KDF, preparations for the meeting have gained momentum following a high-level meeting between representatives from 15 AAAF member countries, alongside the United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa.

The mid planning conference was held at a hotel in Nairobi between August 3 and Thursday, August 7.

"As part of the preparations, representatives from 15 AAAF member countries, alongside the United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, convened for the Mid Planning Conference at a hotel in Nairobi from 3 to August 7 2026," KDF said.

The meeting was aimed at refining the exercise plan, validating the draft AAAFEX Standard Operating Procedures and Concept of Air Operations and Movement, and strengthening interoperability among participating air forces.

The 2027 exercise will test how quickly participating countries can mobilise and integrate multinational air resources after an emergency is declared.

It will also assess the ability of the forces to establish safe and effective command and air tasking procedures while coordinating humanitarian assistance to communities affected by disasters.

Kenya will lead the response scenario during the exercise, providing a platform for participating countries to operate under a common command-and-coordination framework.

According to the Director and Base Commander of Laikipia Air Base, Brigadier Hillary Kipkurui, the success of the exercise would depend on the participating countries' ability to identify gaps and develop practical procedures before the exercise begins.
