The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has restored its online permit application system and extended the timeline for truckers to apply for exemption permits by 10 days.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

This was announced via a public notice released on June 10, where truck drivers who had been locked out of the system can now access permit services through the authority's official portal at  https://permits.kenha.co.ke/ .

“The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to inform transporters that the permit application system has now been restored. You may now access permit services via the following link: https://permits.kenha.co.ke/ ,” stated KeNHA.

The extension comes after the portal experienced a backlog following its restoration due to a surge in applications flooding in over a short period.

📌 What You Need to Know

To handle the surge, KeNHA's verification and approval teams have been working around the clock while simultaneously optimising the system and allocating additional resources.

“Since the portal went live, the Authority has received a high volume of permit applications,” stated KeNHA, adding, “Our team of verifiers and approvers is working around the clock to clear them, alongside the simultaneous system optimisation and resource allocation.”

With this, two categories of transporters stand to benefit directly from this latest relief: the first, trucks already operating under expired permits , which have been granted a 10-day extension specifically for the cargo described in their existing permits.

The second category covers new permit applicants, who now have until June 19, to submit their applications through the KeNHA permits portal.

This 10-day extension follows an earlier announcement on May 27,  in which the transport authority extended the permit application for truck drivers by two weeks.

This meant that for drivers and operators who urgently needed fresh permits, KeNHA put in place a manual alternative process designed specifically to keep goods and cargo moving across the country during the outage.
