Motorists using Mombasa Road and the Nairobi Expressway have been advised to brace for traffic disruptions after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary closure of a key section of the busy transport corridor.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a public notice issued on Thursday, June 11, KeNHA said a section of the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8) and both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between Airtel Complex and General Motors (GM) will be closed for 24 hours.
According to the authority, the closure will take effect from 10pm on Saturday, June 13, and remain in force until 10pm on Sunday, June 14.
KeNHA explained that the disruption will be necessary to facilitate the installation of fabricated footbridge beams for the Airtel Footbridge across the Nairobi Expressway carriageway.
📌 What You Need to Know
"The Kenya National Highways Authority wishes to notify the public that a section of the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8), and both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between Airtel Complex and General Motors will be closed," the notice stated.
Motorists travelling along the affected section will be diverted through the Airtel Complex interchange and connecting loop roads to bypass the construction area before rejoining Mombasa Road beyond the work zone.
According to the traffic management plan, motorists travelling from Nairobi's central business district towards Mombasa Road will be diverted near the Shell area onto Likoni Road before connecting to Enterprise Road and rejoining the A8 Highway at General Motors en route to Cabanas.
Meanwhile, motorists heading into the CBD via the Nairobi Expressway will encounter a closure at the Cabanas section and will be redirected onto the Mombasa Road carriageway, where they will continue their journey towards the city centre under the guidance of traffic marshals.
Alternatively, drivers approaching from the Mombasa-bound direction may use the Ole Sereni interchange route to bypass the affected section before reconnecting to their intended route.
The authority further advised road users to follow the traffic management plan that will be implemented during the closure period and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed on site.
