The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that motorists using the Rironi-Mau Summit highway will pay a toll fee of Ksh8 per kilometre once the road becomes operational.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a project disclosure notice obtained by Kenyans.co.ke , KeNHA said the 139-kilometre highway will operate as a toll road for the next 30 years under the current Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
This means that motorists travelling the full stretch from Nairobi to Nakuru will pay about Ksh1,112 per trip based on the current tariff.
The toll fees will apply to motorists using both the Rironi-Naivasha-Gilgil and Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha routes, subject to future adjustments and regulatory approvals.
📌 What You Need to Know
"Applicable toll tariff is Ksh8, and any future adjustments shall be implemented in accordance with the Project Agreement and applicable Government approvals and regulatory requirements," KeNHA stated.
In the notice dated Tuesday, June 23, the Authority added that all project assets will revert to KeNHA upon the expiry or termination of the concession agreement.
"The concession will run for 30 years, after which the project assets will be handed over to KeNHA in line with agreed performance standards," the Authority added.
KeNHA said the project is being undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), which were selected as preferred partners through a PPP evaluation process.
The PPP Committee subsequently approved the project and its financial risk assessment in November 2025, before authorising the signing of the project agreement, paving the way for road expansion works.
The Ksh200 billion highway expansion project includes the construction of interchanges, bridges, drainage systems, tolling infrastructure and road safety facilities.
