The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day demolition notice to traders and roadside developers operating along major roads linking parts of the Western and Rift Valley regions, warning that all unlawful structures within the road reserves will be removed.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, May 27, the authority directed traders and operators to clear all unauthorised developments that had been erected along the Chebarbar-Lessos-Nabkoi (B12), Mayoni-Bungoma (B139), and Chepsonoi-Kapsabet (B12) roads.
KeNHA stated that the directive applies to all persons who have encroached on both the new and old road alignments within the affected corridors.
According to the authority, the exercise is aimed at paving the way for road reserve protection activities as part of efforts to safeguard highway infrastructure and improve road safety.
📌 What You Need to Know
“All the operators are, therefore, through this Notice, directed to remove all the said structures within 30 days from the Date of this Notice. This is to pave the way for the implementation of road reserve protection activities,” KeNHA stated.
The authority warned that failure to comply with the directive by June 26, 2026, will see the structures demolished without any further notice to the owners.
KeNHA further noted that the demolitions would be carried out in line with Clause 49 of the Roads Act, 2007, with some operators potentially required to cater for the demolition costs.
The latest directive comes amid growing concern among traders operating near major highways, many of whom have previously faced similar eviction notices in other parts of the country .
Earlier in March, the authority issued fresh evacuation notices to traders operating within the road reserve along the Thika Superhighway, targeting business operators in Delview and Kihunguro in Kiambu County, as well as Allsops in Nairobi.
At the time, KeNHA said the notices had been reissued after an earlier directive lapsed, while some traders continued occupying the restricted sections of the highway reserve.
