The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has intensified engagements with traders and local leaders along the Kamulu-Joska-Malaa-Tala-Kangundo Road corridor ahead of planned evictions targeting individuals operating within road reserves.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The consultations come barely a week after KeNHA issued a 30-day notice directing all traders, business owners, and other occupants who have unlawfully encroached on the road reserve to vacate and remove their structures or face forceful eviction.
Some of the key Nairobi and Machakos estates affected by the notice include Kamulu, Joska, Malaa, Kantafu, Nguluni, Tala, Kangundo Town, Koma Hill, Stage 26 area, Muthwani and Kwa Ndege.
On Wednesday, June 10, KeNHA Lower Eastern Region Director Engineer Wilfred Langat led a consultative forum with the business community, local leaders, security officials and other stakeholders along the road to address compliance issues.
📌 What You Need to Know
During the meeting, traders and stakeholders were sensitised on the dangers of road reserve encroachment, road safety concerns, and the need to comply with the notice issued by the authority.
KeNHA explained that the clearance exercise is necessary to pave the way for planned road development works along the busy corridor connecting several towns in Nairobi and Machakos counties.
Before the talks began, Lagat first paid a courtesy call on Machakos County Commissioner Jackson Olechuta to discuss the matter ahead of the evictions and road maintenance works.
The ongoing consultations follow a notice issued by KeNHA on May 29 , warning all individuals and businesses operating unlawfully along the corridor to vacate the road reserve within 30 days.
The Authority cautioned that any unauthorised structures remaining on the affected land after the expiry of the notice period would be removed through enforcement action.
The planned evictions are expected to affect hundreds of traders and businesses operating along the rapidly developing transport corridor, which has experienced increased commercial activity in recent years
