The government has begun the process of acquiring land for the construction of a combined 215 kilometres of roads in Kajiado, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to several notices by the National Land Commission (NLC), the government plans to compulsorily acquire land for the 124-kilometre Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich Pass road and the 91-kilometre Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya and Kajiado-Imaroro roads.
The Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich Pass project has been divided into three lots, with Lot 1 covering 43 kilometres from Barpello (Moru) to Tot Junction.
Lot 2 covers 46 kilometres from Tot Junction through Chesegon to Kopasi River, while Lot 3 stretches 35 kilometres from Kopasi River through Lomut and Sigor to Marich Pass.
📌 What You Need to Know
The NLC said the land acquisition would be undertaken on behalf of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), with affected landowners invited to inspect the plans at the commission's offices and county offices.
The project includes a proposed 7.023-kilometre Chesegon Bypass running from Kabaldamet to Liter, which is contained within the wider Lot 2 alignment.
The Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich Pass corridor cuts through Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties and forms part of a push to improve connectivity across the North Rift.
The corridor also ties into plans earlier outlined by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for a major highway linking parts of the North Rift with South Sudan , with his proposed route passing through Tot and Chesegon before proceeding towards Marich Pass.
On the other side of the Nairobi Metropolitan area, the NLC has also published an inquiry notice for land required for the 91-kilometre Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya and Kajiado-Imaroro roads project in Kajiado County.
The project comprises the 48-kilometre Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya road and the 43-kilometre Kajiado-Imaroro road, both of which were developed under the Roads Annuity Programme.
