Motorists planning to use the Gilgil-Mau Summit section of the expanded Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will pay Ksh8.50 per kilometre once the road is completed, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a project disclosure notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke , KeNHA said the 94-kilometre section, which is part of the broader Rironi-Mau Summit highway, will be expanded by Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International (SDRBI).

The latest announcement comes just two weeks after KeNHA, on June 23, disclosed that motorists using the Rironi-Gilgil section of the same highway would pay a toll fee of Ksh8 per kilometre.

The new rate means motorists using the Gilgil-Mau Summit section will pay more than those travelling on the Rironi-Gilgil stretch, with the toll increasing by Ksh0.50 per kilometre.

📌 What You Need to Know

If the proposed toll charges are implemented, motorists travelling the entire 233-kilometre Rironi-Mau Summit highway will pay a total of Ksh1,911.

This comprises Ksh1,112 for the 139-kilometre Rironi-Gilgil section at Ksh8 per kilometre and Ksh799 for the 94-kilometre Gilgil-Mau Summit stretch at Ksh8.50 per kilometre.

According to KeNHA, just like the Rironi-Gilgil section, the Gilgil-Mau Summit stretch includes construction of interchanges, bridges, drainage structures, tolling infrastructure and road safety features.

The two sections will operate under separate Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements, with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) managing Rironi-Gilgil and SDRBI overseeing the Gilgil-Mau Summit stretch.

The Authority noted that the toll charges will not remain fixed indefinitely, reiterating that any future changes will follow the law and the terms of the agreement.

"The project will operate as a toll road. Applicable toll tariff is Ksh8.50, and any future adjustments shall be implemented in accordance with the project agreement and regulatory requirements," KeNHA said.
