Kenya has opened talks with the United Arab Emirates to, among other things, modernise the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), especially the technology deployed for the country's defence.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Senior officials from the National Treasury, led by Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, and the State Department for Defence, Patrick Mariru, on June 17, met with a delegation from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, to map out how the two countries can work together on the KDF Modernisation Programme.
“ This morning, the PSc Chris Kiptoo, together with his counterpart from the State Department for Defence, Patrick Mariru, held discussions with a delegation from Abu Dhabi on areas of collaboration under the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Modernisation Programme,” stated Treasury.
Central to the engagements was how to sharpen the KDF's operational readiness, bring in advanced technology, and drive institutional reforms that align with Kenya's long-term national security goals.
📌 What You Need to Know
This engagement is anchored in the Kenya-United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, an agreement signed in January last year that opened doors to deeper bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
That agreement laid the groundwork for exactly this kind of collaboration, creating a strategic framework for investment flows, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer between Nairobi and Abu Dhabi.
“The engagement centred on strengthening strategic partnerships to support the enhancement of the KDF’s operational capabilities, technological advancement, and institutional transformation, in line with Kenya’s national security priorities and long-term modernisation objectives," Treasury noted.
Globally, the UAE is ranked 25th in the overall Global Military Index and roughly 50th in broader strategic Military Power Rankings. Despite its smaller size compared to regional peers, the UAE is considered one of the most technologically advanced and highly mobile militaries in the Middle East.
Kenya, on the other hand, is ranked 12th in Africa and 84th globally out of the over 140 countries evaluated according to the Global Firepower Index of 2026, hence the need for military cooperation with a country with much more experience.
Apart from the UAE, Kenya has built a wide defence partnership network spanning multiple continents, with the U.S. leading collaboration on equipment procurement, infrastructure development, and joint special operations training with the KDF.
