Kenya has signed a contract with Swedish aviation consultancy Independent Business Group (IBG) to support the ongoing expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The agreement was signed in Nairobi on Friday, September 18, in the presence of Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Sweden’s Ambassador to Kenya Håkan Åkesson.

IBG is a Stockholm-based aviation infrastructure and consultancy company specialising in air traffic management, airport operations, airspace design and aviation technology.

According to the Swedish government, the multi-million-shilling deal will support the JKIA expansion and modernisation works, specifically air traffic management.

📌 What You Need to Know

"I am delighted to witness the signing of a contract between Swedish IBG and the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development to support the work of extending JKIA," said Åkesson.

Under the agreement, the Swedish company will provide technical expertise and equipment to upgrade Kenya’s air traffic management infrastructure.

It will specifically provide solutions covering airport capacity, airspace and flight procedures, communications, navigation and surveillance systems, training and air navigation services.

A review by Kenyans.co.ke found that IBG has completed more than 90 projects across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa since its establishment in 2007.

The latest deal comes as the government pushes ahead with the wider Ksh154.2 billion JKIA modernisation project, which was awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The expansion and modernisation works officially commenced in June 2026 after the government completed the JKIA Master Plan in February this year.
