Kenya Railways has explained how passengers can access its newly introduced passenger seats on the Madaraka Express trains amid interest in the upgraded coaches.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke , an official from Kenya Railways confirmed that the company has begun the introduction of new coaches on the standard gauge railway, stating that the project began in late 2025.

According to the official, the new coaches are part of a gradual upgrade programme aimed at improving passenger comfort on the Nairobi-Mombasa line, noting that not all coaches have been fitted with the new seating.

"We began to roll out the new passenger seats in 2025. However not all coaches have beeen fit with the new seats," the official explained.

📌 What You Need to Know

“The introduction of the new seats is an ongoing process. We are rolling them out gradually to ensure minimal disruption to operations,” he added.

According to the company, in each trip, only two of the economy-class coaches currently feature the upgraded seats.

This has raised questions about how Kenyans interested in experiencing the new seats can actually access them.

Those who want the new coaches are advised to apply in person over the counter at railway offices , as availability is not fully integrated into the online booking system.

If one applies online, the official explained, they will be allocated seats anywhere and might miss the new coaches.

"To get the new coaches, one has to book over the counter and not online," the official added.
