The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has moved to clarify confusion among Madaraka Express passengers over whether Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) tickets can be transferred between travelers.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a fresh statement issued on June 30, as seen by  Kenyans.co.ke , the corporation reminded the public that all tickets remain strictly non-transferable, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a passenger's change of plans.

For those whose travel dates change, KRC explained that cancellations or rescheduling can only be done at any Madaraka Express station, not online or by phone.

“A few things to keep in mind before you travel: all tickets are non-transferable,” Kenya Railways stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

This implies that once a ticket is booked, it solely belongs to an individual passenger, and can only be cancelled, but not transferred, and must happen at least 48 hours before the scheduled departure time for a passenger to qualify for any refund at all.

According to the corporation, a cancellation attracts a service fee of 30 per cent, while rescheduling comes with a lighter 10 per cent charge.

“If your plans change, cancellations or rescheduling of tickets is done at any Madaraka Express station at least 48 hours before departure, attracting a service fee of 30% and 10%, respectively,” stated Kenya Railways.

Once approved, eligible refunds are processed within 14 working days, giving passengers a clear window to expect their money back.

Beyond the fees, Kenya Railways outlined a strict set of requirements that travellers must meet before any cancellation request is accepted at the counter.

First, the process can only happen in person at any Madaraka Express Station, meaning no email requests, no phone calls, and no shortcuts through customer care lines.
