The Kenya Railways Corporation has named 11 towns set for commercial and logistic hubs along its railway corridors as part of efforts to transform railway infrastructure into economic centres.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
KRC Managing Director Philip Mainga said the Corporation is pursuing the development of the hubs along both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) networks, with 11 towns set to benefit from the move.
Mainga said the initiative is aimed at leveraging land and railway infrastructure to stimulate commercial activity, improve logistics and create economic opportunities along the railway corridors.
"With adequate land along the railway network, Kenya Railways is turning the rail corridor into an economic corridor," Mainga said.
📌 What You Need to Know
Under the Stanard Gauge Railway (SGR) network, planned commercial hubs include Voi, Konza, Athi River, Bomet, Nyamira and Malaba, among other locations.
Kenya Railways also plans to establish commercial hubs along the MGR network in Voi , Taveta, Nakuru, Eldoret and Malaba.
According to Mainga, the planned hubs will support logistics and commercial activities along the rail network, allowing businesses to take advantage of the rail connectivity to move goods and services.
He was speaking on Monday, August 31, when he met the Uganda Members of Parliament who visited Kenya Railways for a benchmarking tour of the Corporation's SGR and MGR operations.
The announcement comes as Kenya Railways seeks to expand the economic role of its railway infrastructure beyond passenger and cargo transportation.
Construction works for the SGR extension from Naivasha to Malaba through Kisumu is ongoing, with works expected to be completed by July 2027.
