In a statement on Tuesday, October 6, Kenya Railways said it had applied for World Bank funding for the project under the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP), part of which will fund the hiring of experts.
“The government has applied for financing from the World Bank towards the cost of the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services,” it said.

📌 What You Need to Know
Others include the Transit Oriented Development Expert, Signalling and Telecommunication Engineering Expert and Rail Civil Engineering Expert.
The Transit Orientated Development Expert will focus on ensuring that railway stations and the areas around them are planned and developed to support efficient transportation of people and goods.
According to Kenya Railways, the four consultants will undertake various assignments that will last for about two years, with the services scheduled to begin in December 2026.
Kenya Railways urged interested individuals or companies to submit a cover letter expressing interest, an updated curriculum vitae, copies of academic and professional certificates, and details of similar assignments.
The development comes three months after the government announced plans to introduce electric trains on the Nairobi commuter rail network under KUMIP, a major project supported by the World Bank.
The planned electric trains are expected to provide faster journeys , increase passenger capacity and reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered locomotives.
