The Kenya Railways Corporation has unveiled plans to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line from Syokimau Station into the Nairobi Central Business District.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

According to reports obtained by this publication, KRC has initiated plans to hire a contractor to develop a 15-kilometre railway link connecting the Nairobi terminus in Syokimau to Nairobi Central Station.

The extension is expected to bridge a long-standing transport gap that has forced SGR passengers to rely on matatus, taxis, or the metre-gauge railway to complete the final stretch into the city.

The move is expected to benefit thousands of SGR commuters and eliminate the costly, time-consuming last-mile journey between the city centre and the Syokimau terminus.

📌 What You Need to Know

Once completed, travellers will be able to board SGR trains directly in the CBD, improving convenience for both daily commuters and long-distance passengers.

According to project plans, the new SGR line will follow the existing metre-gauge railway corridor, passing through Embakasi, Imara Daima, Donholm, and Makadara before terminating at Nairobi Central Station.

At the same time, Kenya Railways is planning to set up new passenger stations at Imara Daima, Makadara, and Nairobi CBD to enhance accessibility for residents along the route.

The contractor will also design and construct a bridge over the Mukuru River and reconstruct the Likoni bridge as part of the project.

Although the exact cost of the project has not yet been disclosed,  the extension is expected to support the planned Nairobi Railway City, a Ksh28 billion project by the State-owned corporation aimed at transforming 13 acres of underutilised land into a modern transport hub.

It is expected to ease congestion on Nairobi roads by encouraging more commuters to use rail transport, while reducing travel time and transport costs to reach the current Syokimau station, located about 20 kilometres from the city centre.
