Kenya recorded more than 11.1 billion cyber threats in the financial year ending June 2026, with attacks designed to overwhelm online systems, known as Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, more than doubling during the period.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows that the country recorded 11,124,632,684 cyber threats in the 2025/2026 financial year, a 29 per cent increase from 8,622,876,858 threats recorded in the previous financial year.

DDoS attacks accounted for 72,164,664 of the threats recorded during the year, representing a 114.3 per cent increase from the 33,680,462 attacks reported in the 2024/2025 financial year.

DDoS attacks occur when a system, network or online service is flooded with large volumes of traffic or requests, potentially disrupting access for legitimate users.

📌 What You Need to Know

The CA data, however, shows that DDoS attacks dropped sharply during the final quarter of the financial year. The regulator recorded 819,325 attacks between April and June 2026.

The figure represented a 90 per cent decline from the 8,202,803 DDoS attacks recorded between January and March 2026, meaning the annual increase was driven by activity recorded across the wider financial year.

Other forms of cyber threats also recorded significant increases during the 12-month period, pointing to a general rise in attempts to exploit digital systems and networks.

Malware attacks increased by 64.8 per cent to 230,307,810, while web application attacks nearly doubled after rising by 99 per cent to 51,508,883.

Mobile application attacks rose by 54 per cent to 789,826, while brute force attacks, which involve repeated attempts to gain unauthorised access to systems or accounts, increased by 3.6 per cent to 132,225,836.

System vulnerabilities remained the largest category of cyber threats recorded by the authority, with 10,637,635,755 incidents reported during the financial year, representing a 28.2 per cent increase from the previous year.
