Canada has introduced a new rule, requiring international students to produce evidence of financial support, which is going to affect thousands of international students from September 1.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Under the new ‘proof of financial support policy’, every applicant must show they have enough money for tuition, living costs, and travel, without working in Canada.
The requirement covers not just the student but also any family members who plan to accompany them throughout their stay in Canada.
According to the Government of Canada, this rule requires applicants to prove they can fund at least the first year of study, and for longer programs, explain how they'll cover the rest.
📌 What You Need to Know
Immigration officers will assess both the amount of money presented and where it came from before approving any study permit application.
Acceptable proof ranges from tuition receipts and bank statements to scholarship letters, loan approvals, and documented support from family or sponsors.
From September 1, a lone student applying for a study permit will need to show Ksh2.2 million (CAD23,448) to cover a year of living expenses.
Along with this, a student bringing along one family member will now require Ksh2.7 million (CAD29,192), up from the Ksh2.6 million (CAD28,502) needed under the current rule.
Families of three moving together must now set aside Ksh3.3 million (CAD35,888) annually, compared to Ksh3.3 million (CAD35,040) under the rules in place until August 31.
On the other hand, a household of four will need Ksh4.1 million (CAD43,572) for the year, slightly higher than the Ksh3.9 million (CAD42,543) required under the previous framework.
