The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has announced that it has received privately initiated proposals from three firms to develop major electricity transmission lines estimated to cost between Ksh50 billion and Ksh65 billion.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a public disclosure notice, KETRACO said the proposals were submitted under the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) Act, 2021, which allows private investors to propose and finance public infrastructure projects before they undergo government evaluation.

The proposals were submitted by Pabari Investment Limited, ENCOMM Power Rental Solutions Limited and AEE Power Ventures S.L. They cover the construction of new high-voltage transmission lines and substations in several parts of the country.

Among the projects proposed is the 220kV Kiambere-Rabai line-in-line-out (LILO) at Mutomo, alongside a 70-kilometre 132kV transmission line linking Mutomo and Makindu. The projects are expected to improve the reliability of electricity supply while extending the high-voltage network to Mutomo if approved.

📌 What You Need to Know

The proposal also includes the construction of a new 400/132kV substation at Voi and a 110-kilometre 132kV transmission line connecting Voi and Taveta.

According to KETRACO, the projects would strengthen electricity supply along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa transport corridor and extend the high-voltage network to Taveta.

Other projects include a 150-kilometre 132kV transmission line from Rumuruti to Maralal and a 50-kilometre transmission line linking Sotik and Kilgoris.

According to the notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke , substations are also proposed in Maralal and Kilgoris to improve power reliability in areas currently served through long 33kV distribution lines.

KETRACO said the proposed projects form part of the Transmission Master Plan 2025-2044, which outlines priority investments needed to expand and strengthen Kenya's national electricity transmission network.

The state corporation estimated the total cost of the projects at between Ksh 50 billion and Ksh 65 billion but noted that the figures are preliminary.  It said the final cost will depend on competitive procurement, land acquisition requirements, resettlement costs and other project development expenses.
