The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has called for the withdrawal of the proposed Medical Practitioners and Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2026, terming it unnecessary.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during a public participation event held on Saturday, August 22, in Kiambu County, KMPDU said the existing laws governing health practitioners are enough and that the doctors do not need any further laws.
According to the doctors' union, existing laws are sufficient to regulate healthcare professionals and address malpractice; there is no need for new regulations.
"KMPDU has therefore called for the withdrawal of the Bill, noting that existing laws and regulatory mechanisms are adequate to address malpractice and uphold standards in the health sector," KMPDU stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
The union said it supports effective regulation of medical practitioners and dentists, but questioned the need for additional regulatory provisions proposed in the Bill.
"KMPDU supports effective regulation of healthcare professionals. However, regulation must be evidence-based, legally coherent, operationally feasible, and primarily focused on protecting the public," it added.
According to KMPDU, any new regulation should be evidence-based, legally coherent , operationally feasible, and primarily focused on protecting the public.
The doctors argued that the existing legal and regulatory framework already provides mechanisms for addressing malpractice and maintaining professional standards in the health sector.
The proposed legislation seeks to introduce additional regulatory measures, including provisions targeting the fraudulent acquisition of practicing licenses.
It also seeks to expand the oversight mandate of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council , and curb malpractices in the health sector.
